Smarter Travel: PortsToronto Launches AI Sorting Assistants at Billy Bishop Airport

In a move that blends exceptional visitor experience with real-time climate action, PortsToronto has deployed Oscar, the AI Sorting Assistant, at Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. This innovative initiative transforms a routine moment—disposing of waste—into a positive visitor experience that also builds environmental awareness.

Oscar Sort enhances the travel experience by making waste sorting quick, clear, and effortless. Using AI-powered recognition and a real-time digital display, it instantly guides guests to correctly dispose of their items—eliminating confusion at the bin while boosting recycling rates and reducing landfill.

“Oscar makes waste sorting simple and intuitive—exactly what travellers need at a busy airport. We’re not only reducing waste across the airport, but also engaging and educating visitors and staff along the way. It’s a win for people and for the planet"

Juhi Matta, Senior Manager of Environment, Social and Governance at PortsToronto

Even when not in use, Oscar continues to engage passers-by. Its screen cycles through climate-focused messaging that reinforces the airport’s sustainability mission and keeps environmental stewardship visible throughout the terminal.

Behind the scenes, Oscar contributes to operational efficiency by reducing waste stream contamination and lowering waste management costs. Its built-in media platform also generates revenue—offsetting the cost of deployment and making Oscar a self-sustaining part of the airport’s environmental strategy.

“This is about reimagining airport infrastructure to serve both people and the plane. Oscar helps sustainability teams offset costs and begin generating revenue, while delivering a better guest experience.”

Hassan Murad, CEO and Co-Founder of Intuitive AI.

With this launch, Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport enhances its ESG measures, which have received wide recognition for leadership in the sector, and demonstrates that investing in intelligent, climate-conscious technologies supports both service and sustainability—proving that environmental impact and convenience can go hand in hand.
